Very Valerie Ellis
40x50cm oil on canvas.
An exercise in the relationship between subject and context. Some areas of ground colour are 'walked' over by brushstrokes in contrasting value or colour. Other areas of ground colour meet with similar value or colour brushstrokes. The careful observer sees that the effects are entirely dependent on the relationship between the context and the subject. The point being made by the painting is that any idea, object or person has value only in relation to the context in which it sits; understanding this principle is the start of controlling value by controlling context.
