Madame du Pompadour at 299
Oil on canvas, 40x50cm
The incomparable Madame du Pompadour was, at her height, the functional Queen of France in the mid-1700s despite her humble middle-class origins. An intelligent, beautiful, strategic and charitable woman of merit. She was originally depicted in the detailed rococo fashion of the time but here is painted in the impressionist style that developed in France 200 years later. She is pictured standing in a garden next to a statue of a mother and cherubic child - a poignant setting considering the loss of her own two children in their infancy.
Framing: Black paint and foil finished timber.
Finished size: 47x56cm.
