"To start with, I used watercolour paint to experiment with technique quickly and cheaply. I moved to acrylic paint to create still life and find still life painting very pleasant as the subject is typically peaceful and cooperative. Eventually, I graduated myself to oil paint on canvas because of it's classical roots and malleability. Most of the early work is portraiture; it's the greatest technical challenge and satisfied my desire to master representational art.
During the winter of 2021 I was left with only paper, charcoal and pastels to work with during a move of studios. The speed of these materials gave me the opportunity to experiment beyond representational art into expressionist portraits and develop my confidence to find a visual language of my own."
