This painting of irises belongs to the same body of work that later produced my yellow roses. In some ways, it laid the groundwork: a study not just of flowers as a subject, but of how pattern, space and perception can be woven together on the canvas.
I’ve always been drawn to irises, especially in this particular soft blend of pinks and whites. Their frilled, sculptural blooms have a stateliness that can easily feel static when painted. To counter that, I structured the composition around a diagonal movement, giving the image more dynamism and vitality. This diagonal creates a sense of flow across what is otherwise a still, contemplative subject.
