Context

The Context series is a collection of 10 abstract oil paintings.

The Context series of paintings is the embodiment of the idea that the individual is shaped by and relative to their surroundings. Each painting starts with a background of areas of colour...across these wander small brushstroke-pads of another colour that cross from one area to another illustrating how different they look in one area, or context, compared to another. Some pads are outlined which also changes their appearance. Lines and circles also cross areas, and clouds of colour obscure some shapes.

As you look carefully you see that the context in which a mark is made profoundly changes the impression of that mark; a dark tone on a light background stands out whereas the same dark tone on a dark background blends-in. So it is with individuals; we stand-out or blend-in in relation to our surroundings.
